Arnold David Clapman received a Master of Fine Arts degree in graphic arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and from Tufts University in Medford MA, and a BFA in Illustration & Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore MD. He has had one-man shows and group exhibitions in New York City, Maryland, New England, and California. Arnold was a graphic designer in network television for five years, and has been a freelance animator, comic book artist, magazine illustrator and cartoonist for thirty years. Also, he has produced a variety of art projects for Muhammad Ali, Richie Havens, Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong, and other celebrities.
Arnold's artwork has been featured in Heavy Metal Magazine, Columbia Records album covers, and many popular magazines and newspapers. He is an award-winning muralist and has written and illustrated several children's books. He has also published three issues of COMIX BY KIDZ, a compilation of the best comic book stories and art by students of his comic book art classes.
From 1995 to 2010, Arnold used his comic book art teaching skills to work with at-risk teenagers in drug, alcohol and gang diversion programs in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties in California. He mentored art school candidates in a program sponsored by the Scotts Valley Police Department and entertained residents in Juvenile Hall with his art for 10 years. Arnold's non-profit summer scholorship art school program enabled 2 graffiti artists to move out of their wartorn barrios and win 4 year scholorships to the Chicago Art Institute and the Art Institute of San Francisco.
For 19 years Arnold facilitated AA meetings as a Hospitals and Institutions volunteer in California's Soledad Maximum Security Prison. Arnold did further volunteer work for 2 years as counselor in an Impact Program at Pleasant Valley Maximum Security Prison near Fresno. He also worked in the adolescent unit of a local drug and alcohol residential treatment center as an art teacher and counselor for 7 years.
Arnold also creates music with and for the conga drums.
